The Birth Parent Scholarship Fund was created by AFTH’s Associate Director, Heidi Gonzalez. “I wanted to give men and women a chance to better their situations that may have led them to place a child for adoption. By helping them financially with school or trade school we are helping them to improve their lives,” said Heidi. The scholarship fund is primarily financed through donations and is not exclusive to only birth parents who have placed a child for adoption through AFTH.
The board members of the nonprofit gather twice a year to analyze scholarship applications for the spring and fall semesters. The overall goal for AFTH is to increase the number of scholarships given out and the monetary amount that is awarded to each recipient. The Fall 2019 Birth Parent Scholarship recipient is Lucy Amidon. Lucy currently works for a financial corporation. It is her goal to earn her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and management. Lucy’s dream is to pursue a career as a commercial or residential loan officer within the company she currently works for.
“I am a single mother to my 3-year-old and having this scholarship gives me the ability to be able to work, go to school, and still be home to tuck my son into bed at night without having to worry about getting a second job,” said Lucy. Lucy will be studying at Harrisburg Area Community College in pursuit of her bachelor’s degree.

About Adoptions From The Heart:
Adoptions From The Heart (AFTH) was founded in 1985 by Maxine Chalker, our Executive Director. Maxine, herself as an adoptee, wanted to give adoption a new face by breaking down the barriers and taking some of the mystery out of the adoption process. AFTH is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a safe, loving home for children and offer comprehensive, high-quality services to adoptive families, birth parents, and children. The agency is licensed in PA, NJ, DE, CT, VA, and NY.
