Following a public comment period, the Federal Trade Commission has approved a final settlement order in the matter of the Indoor Tanning Association, and sent letters to members of the public who submitted comments on the order. The final order settles charges that the association exaggerated the benefits of indoor tanning, and falsely denied that indoor tanning increases the risk of squamous cell and melanoma skin cancers.
The FTC vote approving the final order was 4-0, with Commissioner Edith Ramirez not participating. (FTC File No. 082 3159; the staff contact is Janet Evans, Bureau of Consumer Protection, 202-326-2125. See press release dated January 26, 2010 at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/01/tanning.shtm.)
