FTC Releases Agenda for PrivacyCon 2018

The Federal Trade Commission released the final agenda for PrivacyCon 2018, an event that will be held on February 28, 2018, and will highlight research that explores the privacy and security implications of emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.

The 2018 event will also focus on the economics of privacy, including how to quantify the harms that result when companies fail to secure consumer information, and how to balance the costs and benefits of privacy-protective technologies and practices. Acting FTC Chairman Maureen K. Ohlhausen will provide opening remarks.

The 2018 event marks the FTC’s third annual PrivacyCon, and will feature presentations from 20 researchers over the course of four sessions. The first session will cover research on collection, exfiltration, and leakage of private information. The second session will explore consumer preferences, expectations, and behaviors. The third session will feature presentations related to economics, markets and experiments. The last session will focus on research related to tools and ratings for privacy management.

PrivacyCon 2018 will also include a Student Poster Session aimed at encouraging the next generation of researchers to explore the privacy and data security implications of emerging technologies, as well as the economics of privacy. In addition, representatives from government agencies that fund privacy research — including some research to be presented at PrivacyCon — will be available during lunch to discuss funding opportunities and agency needs.

PrivacyCon 2018, which is free and open to the public, will take place at the Constitution Center conference facility, located at 400 Seventh St, SW, Washington, D.C., 20024. The event will also be webcast on the FTC website and live tweeted using the hashtag #PrivacyCon18.
