In anticipation of the website launch, My Flood Risk was previewed, tested, and evaluated by hundreds of property owners and industry-leading professionals, including real estate agents and mortgage lenders. Their feedback was collected and implemented to help enhance the platform.
The My Flood Risk portal was created by AB Risk Corporation, an affiliate of National Flood Insurance, LLC, in partnership with Shoothill Ltd, the software developers behind the United Kingdom’s National Flood Alerts system. Together, this team of flood experts recognized that flooding remains the greatest uninsured risk in the United States.
Designed to communicate flood vulnerability by categorizing properties into high, moderate, and low-risk flood zones, FEMA flood maps have been the standard for determining flood risk throughout the United States. When buying a new property, lenders use the FEMA flood zone to determine if the property is in a flood zone that requires flood insurance. However, due to data limitations, these flood maps often fail to protect millions of property owners.
Amanda Bryant, Director of Operations for AB Risk, describes the outdated FEMA flood maps as one of the influences for designed My Flood Risk. “Many property owners do not know that these flood maps are typically out of date and inaccurate,” said Bryant, citing Hurricane Harvey as an example. “Most Harvey flood victims were told that they lived in low-risk zones, but the zoning was based on outdated and incomplete information.”
To combat outdated and inaccurate information, My Flood Risk raises awareness and provides vital tools that empower you to protect yourself and your property from rising waters.
“We hope to change the decades-old perception of true flood risk in America by raising awareness, which begins with knowledge,” explained Bryant. “We want My Flood Risk to be a one-stop resource for everything flood.”
