SHiFT-Recovery by Acorn will be facilitating a new five-week program beginning with a six-day intensive food addiction in-patient treatment stay on October 11 in Kissimmee, FL. The five-week program includes a six-day stay at an abstinent facility and a 30-Day Aftercare program that will provide attendees with a transition into life back home for the outpatient portion of the program.
“I struggled with weight problems for most of my life. I tried a plethora of diets, exercise classes, and therapy. The solution, I was told, was either, ‘Eat less and exercise more,’ or, ‘Work on your emotional issues with a good therapist,’” said Amanda Leith who once weighed over 300 pounds. “I did these things over and over and over again. Nothing shifted.”
Over four years ago, Ms. Leith, who has a background in drug and alcohol counseling at a Vancouver-based non-profit residential treatment center for women, traveled to Florida to attend an Acorn Primary Intensive one-week program where she was introduced to the concept of food addiction.
“I had never before believed it was possible to be physically addicted to certain food substances,” Ms. Leith said. “I always thought I had no willpower but I discovered that I have a physical addiction which causes me to crave foods with sugar and flour. No matter how many diet programs I tried, none of them would have worked.”
Ms. Leith, who has since lost over 140 pounds and kept it off for over three years, was so impressed with the Acorn program that she bought the company earlier this year.
“Acorn has been supporting people with food addiction for over 25 years. This program saved my life, without a doubt. That is why I decided switch my focus as an addictions counselor from working with drug and alcohol addiction to working with people struggling with food addiction,” she said.
Ms. Leith rebranded the company to include the SHiFT label: Sobriety, Hope, Freedom, and Transformation. Currently, Ms. Leith is working to bring SHiFT – Recovery by Acorn to as many food addicts as possible.
To that end, Ms. Leith will be facilitating a new five-week program beginning with a six-day intensive food addiction in-patient treatment stay on October 11 in Kissimmee, FL.
The five-week program includes a six-day stay at an abstinent facility and a 30-Day Aftercare program that will provide attendees with a transition into life back home for the outpatient portion of the program.
“I feel a personal responsibility to help those who are in so much pain learn to live a life free of food obsession and experience the miracles I have,” Ms. Leith said. “It’s an amazing life now.”
