Investor Bulletin: Seven Ways to Use Investor.gov

Investor.gov is the SEC’s website for Main Street investors, designed to help you better understand investing.  Use the informative tools and resources on Investor.gov to make a plan, learn important questions to ask, and get tips to avoid investment fraud.

  • DO A BACKGROUND CHECK ON YOUR INVESTMENT PROFESSIONAL

Are you thinking about using an investment professional?  You can use the Check Out Your Investment Professional search tool on Investor.gov to research investment professionals and, importantly, confirm that they are licensed and registered.  You can also use the SEC Action Lookup – Individuals (SALI) feature to see whether an investment professional has a court judgment or Commission order against him or her in an SEC enforcement matter or been subject of sanctions by the SEC.  Knowing who you are dealing with is a great first step toward protecting your money.

  • LEARN ABOUT INVESTMENT PRODUCTS

Want to know more about stocks, bonds, ETFs, and mutual funds?  Use Investor.gov to find out more about the features and risks of a wide variety of investment products.

All investments have fees – and they can add up in a hurry.  Understanding fees can help you make a more informed decision regarding any investment you are considering.

GET TIPS FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Watch the “Notes from the Chairman” video series with SEC Chairman Clayton’s personal notes on investing concepts or, if you are choosing or working with a financial professional, check out the Chairman’s “Brokers and Investment Advisers” video series.

  • FIND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT YOUR INVESTMENT GOALS

Are you starting your first job and considering how to begin building wealth?  Are you mid-career and looking to invest money for your child’s education?  Are you approaching retirement and want to know more about asset allocation and diversification?  Investor.gov has resources to help you invest for your goals

  • USE ONLINE TOOLS TO MAKE INVESTING SIMPLER

Investor.gov has a popular compound interest calculator, as well as a savings goal calculator that can help you determine how much you need to contribute monthly to reach a specific financial goal.  The site also has a wide range of other free financial planning tools.

  • GET THE LATEST ON ICOS AND OTHER DIGITAL ASSETS

Thinking about investing in digital assets?  Visit Investor.gov’s Spotlight on ICOs and Digital Assets to learn key questions to ask before you make a decision.

Investor.gov also has investor bulletins and fraud alerts on timely topics like microcap investing and special pages with resources to help groups like the military, seniors, teachers, and librarians.
